Woodlot

Toronto, Canada

A modern comfort Canadian food with a twist!

Woodlot is a rustic looking place with a woodshed and chopping block out front.  Inside this two-storey restaurant, there’s a communal table in front of the open kitchen and seats are upstairs in the loft overlooking the action at the stoves.  There are two menus: one for vegetarians and one for carnivores like us!

Woodlot serves as a bakery during the day with a variety of sourdough baguettes for take away.

I would say that coming from San Francisco (almost known as the Sourdough capital), this may not be the best sourdough bread that we've had, but it was still fresh and soft.

Charred Haloumi Crostini
w/ fresh peach, white bean and mint

This was incredible!

Ember Grilled Hen-o’-the-Woods Mushrooms
w/ wild rice, black walnut, mache and balsamic vinegar

~

Sweet Corn and Mascarpone Agnolotti
w/ shrimp, corn emulsion and dill

Russet Potato Gnocchi
w/ roasted aubergine, graine de paradis, chili, lemon and ricotta salata

Confit Duck Cabbage Rolls
w/barley, wild rice, pistachio, cherry and smoked ham hock

Duck cabbage rolls, this was innovative presented like large green golf balls and their braised duck filling was super tasty.  Each bite exuded lots of textures with the crunch of cabbage at the end.

Whey-Fed Pork Chop
w/ pistachio, bread sauce, apricot and bitter almond

~

Naturally Raised Flat Iron Steak
w/ summer mushroom preserve and charred spring onion

The desserts were uniformly excellent:

Chocolate Bishop Bar
w/ amarena cherry, hazelnut and marshmellow fluff

This was unbelievably good. An amazingly rich dark chocolate bar with hazelnut goodness.
~

Vanilla Pavlova
w/ lemon curd, wild blueberries, bay and vanilla cream

Incredible lemon curd with wild fresh blueberry and warm marshmallow!

~

Treat Board
a selection of small sweets for two

(Basically it as similar to a petit fours)

Good company good food.  Advertised as "Canadian comfort food", even after this scrumptious meal, we are still not sure what exactly is Canadian comfort food.  =) The serving size was fair and the food itself was delicious with Woodlot's "farm-to-table"  theme - all very local, fresh, and tasty.
