hot pot time

one of the most popular eating past times during the cold (well not that cold) winter months in hong kong is hot pot. whether it's taiwanese, cantonese or japanese style, people just love to gather around the boiling pot and cook their own food. it's easy and fun. it leaves you a tingling warm fuzzy feeling inside as you devour your meal.

so my dad's side of the family loves going to this particular place for hot pot, 18 Brook Cantonese Cuisine at the Renaissance Harbour View Hotel in Wanchai, where they offer "all you can eat" (drinks are extra). they provide one bowl of complimentary shark’s fin soup, albeit of lower (very low) quality. each person gets a pot to yourself which is very hygenic and you choose your soup base from 10 different options (pear & chestnut broth, szechuan spicy broth etc). Last but not least, you order all kinds of meats, vege, seafood etc till you drop!

for christmas, we went to a friend's house for the usual ghs gathering and they prepared hot pot. unlike the above, we only had 2 different types of soup base (spicy and chicken broth) and we made own dipping sauce with the following ingredients:

Here is the rest of the raw dishes to be cooked. ranging from fish, to shellfish, meat, veggies etc.  mind you, this was eaten by 18 ppl
