Mamacita

Marina, San Francisco

A neighborhood friendly posh restaurant serving original Mexican dishes made from scratch each day with house made tamales, tortillas and sauces.  One can argue that it is not authentic as this is a Californian style Mexican establishment, which I would agree.  However, let's just exclude the local taquerias in the Mission area for comparison and purely focus on its cuisine and fresh ingredients used (apparently some are from the owner's family farm).

Ceviche Moderno
Rock shrimp ceviche with mango-habanero “agua ardiente”, avocado & blue corn tostadas.

Carnitas Especial
Sizzling platter of niman ranch pork “confit” (1/2 lb) with seven-layer fundido & guacamole “casero"

The Carnitas Especial is a platter of goodies including the following: fried pork confit, house made tortillas, a seven layer dip and guacamole, casserole with two kinds of cheeses, salsa, rice and beans. A satisfying bite with chunks of savory treats and moist meat.

Plato a la Plancha
Mary’s duck leg “carnitas” tacos with strawberry-arbol chile chutney, avocado & farm chicories.

Carne Asada
Griddled meyer ranch skirt steak tacos with guacamole, chimichurri rojo, caramelized onions & arugula

This was so fresh and the steak was just perfect.

As the night progresses, this trendy spot feels more like a bar scene with people standing at the bar and crowding around the communal table, which translate to an even more energetic noise level, fueled by the always excellent drinks. We had classic mojitos for the table and it was super refreshing.  Mamacita delivers a very satisfying Mexican-inspired food in SF.
